ALUMNI PROGRAMMES
Pre-alumni
Alumni are in the vanguard of the fundraising efforts of the University. The pre-alumni are current students. The Advancement Office collaborates with students on campus so that after graduating they may become donors to the University. The following programmes are conducted with pre-alumni:
Leave-a-Legacy Programme
In order to optimize the alumni resources to the benefit of the University, pre-alumni graduating sets are organized for a leave-a-legacy programme from the 2006/2007 set to date. This involves graduating students in designing, executing and donating projects to the University. So far such projects have included motor park design, supplying white boards and podiums for halls in the University, renovation of seats in lecture halls, renovation of classrooms, fixing public address systems in lecture halls, etc. The aim is to inculcate a spirit of giving in pre-alumni on campus, so that they develop a strong attitude of giving back to the University after graduation. In addition, the programme creates a leadership culture in them, as they identify, execute and donate these projects for the benefit of the University. Such involvement creates an opportunity for them to know themselves better. For example, a final-year graduate of Law may get acquainted with his medical, pharmaceutical or political science colleagues.
Distinguished Alumni Lecture
The Office invites distinguished alumni to the University to deliver lectures to students as a way of mentoring students on campus.
The objective of the lecture regarding role modelling and mentorship has been met. In a survey conducted at each lecture, guest lecturers expressed delight at being back on campus and sharing their wealth of experience. Staff and students surveyed at the end of each lecture found them 'interesting', 'rewarding', 'inspiring' and 'encouraging'. Another survey of the Alumni lecturers found that they said that there have been improvements on campus and stated their willingness to further support the University. The lecturers also stated their motivation for the lectures to include 'inspiring younger, aspiring writers', and assisting 'Education students with vast career opportunities'. These lectures are available to students in digital format on the institutional repository.
Post-Alumni
The Alumni Directorate has functional alumni chapters at the national, international chapter and branch levels. To further develop alumni chapter groups within Nigeria, new chapters have been launched in Bayelsa, Rivers, Kogi, Bauchi, Benin, Benue, Gombe and Adamawa States, and within Plateau State at Mangu, Kanke, Pankshin, and the University of Jos, and they are at different points of incubation. Enugu State and Kaduna chapters have been resuscitated with new invigorated executives now in place. The National Executive Committee of the Alumni Association was reconstituted in 2008 to spearhead organized alumni activity. The President of the Alumni Association was subsequently elected by Convocation to represent alumni on the Governing Council of the University for the first time ever. The current National President, Mr. Idris Yakubu, is the third Alumni President occupying the Convocation seat in the Governing Council. DCG of Prisons (Rtd), Salau Momdu, is the second Alumni President while Prof Dimis Mailafiya is the third.
The University presently has twenty-six chapters of the University of Jos Alumni Association, contact persons in all states of the Federation, and two chapters abroad
