NATIONAL ASSEMBLY SOON TO INTRODUCE BILL ON STRONGER CORPORATE GOVERNANCE

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara says
the National Assembly will soon introduce Legislation that will strengthen
Corporate Governance in Nigeria.
The Speaker was speaking at the 81st Inaugural Lecture of the University
of Jos delivered by Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN of the
Department of Public Law, Faculty of law, titled “Nigeria Corporate
Governance, from Concentrated Ownership to Dispersed Ownership –
Which Way Forward”.
According to Dogara, enacting the law has become necessary in view of
the fact that corporate collapse leads to loss of jobs which in turn affects
the economy negatively as witnessed in recent years. According to him,
investigation reveals that what leads to corporate collapse in many cases
was negative management of the companies observing that, insiders are
always involved whenever such problems are found.
Speaker Dogara who is a 1992 Graduate of Law from the University of
Jos, used the occasion to congratulate the Inaugural Lecturer for a well-
articulated, educative, insightful and timely research presentation. He
pledged that as concerned Alumni, he and his classmates of Unijos Law
set 1992 would endow a chair in their Faculty.
Delivering the 81st Inaugural Lecture, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN
charged Government to pay attention to companies in Nigeria and to
support genuine entrepreneurs. He emphasized that for instance, in
Plateau State a company like NASCO can be supported to compete
favourably internationally.
The Plateau State Governor, Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong assured of more
public-private partnership for the reduction of unemployment in the State.
The Governor represented by the Deputy Governor, Professor Sonni
Tyoden, who is also a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos,
described the lecture as beneficial in moving the Nigerian economy
forward.
Earlier in an opening remark, Vice-Chancellor of University, Professor
Seddi Sebastian Maimako welcomed and appreciated the Speaker, Hon.
Yakubu Dogara whom he described as the most prominent Alumnus of
the University and Governor Simon Lalong whom he said is a
distinguished Alumnus that the University is proud of.
Professor Maimako commended the Inaugural Lecturer for his scholarly
contribution in the furtherance of the development of humanity and urged

activities.
